Recognised as the most notable expression of Islamic philanthropy, Waqf is the voluntary, permanent, and irrevocable dedication of a portion of one’s wealth – in cash or kind – to Allah. Standing out as one of the greatest achievements of Islamic civilization, Waqf is a philanthropic foundation, with the mission of maximizing the value of endowments for the greater benefit of society.
With the rise in innovations and the disruptions happening in both the Islamic finance and technological terrains, coupled with new complexities and economic uncertainties arising post COVID-19, the role of charitable and philanthropic bodies, especially Waqf, have inadvertently been placed under the spotlight to see how they can be utilized to support the wellbeing of society. Waqf is being forced to maneuver and reinvent itself in terms of its application, governance, and regulations to remain relevant, especially since it constitutes a major pillar in the socio-economic space. An improvement in these key areas would provide us with the key to unlocking the benefits Waqf holds in the revival, facilitation and strengthening of the ummah.
This year, the 10th edition of the Global Waqf Conference (GWC 2022) will be held from the 2nd to the 4th of December 2022. It is proudly being organized by The Islamia University of Bahawalpur Pakistan in partnership with the founding partners – International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and University Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) along with technology partner – Finterra and in collaboration with University Islam Malaysia (UIM), Al-Madinah International University (MEDIU), Ihsan Trust Pakistan, Waqf Center for Indonesian Development & Studies (WaCids) Indonesia; and knowledge partners – IBA Centre for Excellence in Islamic Finance, Pakistan.
With the theme of “Waqf Inclusiveness In The New Islamic Economic & Finance Model”, the conference will serve as a platform to establish clarity, explore the boundaries of new waqf developments, initiatives, and shed light on new thoughts, technologies, and regulations. Another key objective of the conference is to highlight success stories and showcase how Waqf can serve as a new economic model to enhance the well-being of Muslim societies globally.
